A Starter Guide To Blogging
Have you thought about starting a blog but you aren’t sure exactly where to begin? Well, you’re in the right place! There is a lot of information out there to sort through and it can get confusing. Here’s a starter guide on how to begin!
- Decide what you want to blog about.
Is this a personal blog? A business or an organization blog?
What’s your niche? (Not sure what a niche is?) How do you decide what you want to blog about?
- Decide on the blogging platform you want to use.
I recommend WordPress (it’s the most popular platform and it’s easy to use), but you can create an HTML site, or use another platform such as blogger, or tumblr, ect. Speaking of WordPress, do you know the difference in WordPress.org vs WordPress.com? Here’s a handy guide!
- Pick a domain name
The most recognized domain names end with .com however there are also many other options out there. When available though, I’d suggest always going with the .com name because it’s an online standard. You can search domain name availability with these tools: pcnames, domize.com, trademark search.
You can buy a domain name separate from your hosting provider or purchase directly with most hosting providers. I recommend setting it up separately through a service such as Namecheap.com because if you decide to switch host for some reason, you won’t lose your domain name in the process.
- Find a host (Buy some real estate)–
It’s time to find a hosting provider! There are many out there to choose from. You can host your blog a couple of different ways. There is free hosting, such as yourname.wordpress.com or the alternative of self-hosting and picking your own domain name. Buying your own real estate (domain) helps to back your authority as a blogger rather than going with a free domain option. Check out Self hosted vs Free…which is the best option?
Buying your own domain name? My suggestion for a hassle-free way to register your domain-Namecheap.
Some of the host options-
- Install WordPress!
You’ll do this directly through your hosting provider. Most have a link on their C-Panel or Dashboard.
- Time to Customize!
The fun begins… This is where you decide on your design/layout, theme selections (free options, paid options), customizing features, user friendly, clean, reflecting brand, responsive
- Write your first post!
Time to start blogging! I would recommend having 2-3 post ready and then at least another 2-3 in waiting so that you have some content built up. You don’t have post your initial 2-3 at the same time, you can schedule them to post at a different time.
